The work function for a certain metal is...

The work function for a certain metal is 4.2 eV. Will this metal give photoelectric emission for incident radiation of wavelenght 330 nm?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Work function, `W_(0) = 4.2 eV = 6.72 xx 10^(-19)J`
Threshold frequency, `f_(0) = (W_(0))/(h)`
or, `f_(0) = (6.72 xx 10^(-19))/(6.626 xx 10^(-34)) = 1.01 xx 10^(15)Hz`
`:.` Threshold wavelength,
`lamda_(0) = (c)/(f_(0)) = (3 xx 10^(8))/(1.01 xx 10^(15)) = 2.97 xx 10^(-7) m = 297 nm`
`:' lamda_(0) lt lamda` (where `lamda`= incident wavelength)
i.e., `f_(0) gt f`
`:.` Photoelectric emission is not possible in this case.
