A proton and an `alpha`particle are accelerated through the same potential difference. Which one of the two has
less kinetic energy? Justify your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The kinetic energy is related to accelerating potential as `K = eV " " :. K_(p) = e_(p)V and K_(alpha) = e_(alpha) V`
`:. (K_(p))/(K_(alpha)) = (e_(p))/(e_(alpha))`
Since, the charge on proton is less than that on alpha particle, `K_(p) lt K_(alpha)` for the same potential difference.
