The ground state energy of hydrogen ato...

The ground state energy of hydrogen atom is -13.6 eV.
what are the kinetic and potential energies of the electron in this state ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If `E_k and E_p` be the kinetic and potential energies respectively , total energy , `E=E_k+E_p`.
For any state of a hydrogen atom,
`E_p=-2E_k and E=E_k-2E_k=-E_k or, E_k=-E`
`therefore` For the ground state,
`E_k=-E=+13.6 eV`
`E_p=-2E_k=-2xx13.6=-27.2eV`
