Atomic weight of ordinary hydrogen is 1....

Atomic weight of ordinary hydrogen is 1.008. ordinary hydrogen contains two isotopes `""_(1)^(1)H and ""_(1)^(2)H`. What is the weight percentage of `""_(1)^(2)H` in ordinarry hydrogen?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let in ordinary, `""_(1)^(1)H=x%`
`therefore`Percentage of `""_(1)^(2)=100-x`
`therefore`Atomic mass of ordinary hydrogen`=(x xx1+(100-x)xx2)/(100)`
As per given data, `(x+(100-x)xx2)/(100)=1.008`
or, `200-x=1.008" "therefore x=99.2`
Therefore, ordinary hydrogen contains 99.2% of `""_(1)^(1)H and (100-99.2)=0.8%` of `""_(1)^(2)H`.
