A compound contains 28g of nitrogn and 72% of metal by weight. In the compound, 3 atoms of metal remains combined with 2 atoms of nitrogen. What is the atomic mass of the metal?

Each molecule of the compound contains 3 atoms of metal and 2 atoms of nitrogn. If the symbol of the metal be M, then molecular formula of the compound will be `M_(3)N_(2)`.
Molecular mass of the compound`=3a+2xx14=3a+28`
[where a is the atomic mass of the metal]
`therefore`Quantity of nitrogen in the compound`=(28)/((3a+28))xx100%`
Now, according to the problem, `(28)/(3a+28)xx100=28`
or, 3a+28=100 or, a=24
