Haemoglobin was found to contain 0.335% iron (atomic weight of Fe=56). The molecular weight of haemoglobin is `1.67xx10^(4)`. Find the number of iron atoms in haemoglobin.

Text Solution

Molecular mass of haemoglobin`=1.67xx10^(4)`
`therefore`1 gram-mole of haemoglobin`=1.67xx10^(4)g`.
Here, Fe-content in haemoglobin=0.335%
`therefore`Fe-content in `1.67xx10^(4)`g of haemoglobin
`=(0.335xx1.67xx10^(4))/(100)=55.945g`.
Hece, the number of gram-atom of Fe present in haemoglobin`=(55.945)/(56)~~1` `because`atomic weight of Fe=56
`therefore`In 1 gram-mole of haemoglobin, the number of gram-atom of Fe=1
So, 1 mol of haemoglobin contains only one atom of Fe.
