A young has given his bride an engagement ringg containing 0.50 carat diamond. How many atoms of carbon is present iin that ring? [1 carat=200 mg].

Text Solution

1 carat=200mg=0.2g. So, 0.5 carat=`0.5xx0.2=0.1`g
Diamond is composed of only carbon atoms
i.e., 0.1g diamond=0.1 g carbon
`therefore` Number of carbon atoms in 12g of carbon `=3.022xx10^(23)`
[`because` atomic mass of carbon=12]
`therefore`Number of carbon atoms in 0.1 g of carbon
`=(6.022xx10^(23))/(12)xx0.1=5.018xx10^(21)`
Therefore, the young man gave his bride-to-be `5.018xx10^(21)` atoms of carbon.
