According to problem, at the same conditions of temperature and pressure, 1 volume of gaseous hydrocarbon contains 2 volumes of hydrogen.
`therefore`n molecules of gaseous hydrocarbon contain 2n molecules of hydrogen.
or, 1 molecule of gases hydrocarbon contain 2 molecules of hydrogen=4 atoms of hydrogen. (according to avogadro's hypothesis)
`therefore`Molecular formula of hydrocarbon is `C_(x)H_(4)` [where x stands for number of C-atoms]
`therefore`Molecular mass of `C_(x)H_(4)=12xx x+4` [`because` atomic mass of C=12,H=1]
Again, vapour density of the hydrocarbon=14
so, molecular formula of the hydrocarbon`=2xx14=28`
`thereforeC_(x)H_(4)=14xx2`
Therefore, `12x+4=28 or, x=2`
`therefore`Molecular formula of hydrocarbon is `C_(2)H_(4)`.
