0.362g of a metal is added to an aqueous solution of `AgNO_(3)`. Consequently, 3.225g of silver is precipitated. What is the equivalent mass of the metal. [Atomic mass of Ag=108, valency=1]

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Equivalent mass of `Ag=("atomic mass")/("valency")=(108)/(1)=108`
Now, displacement of Ag by the metal from a compound of the metal occurs in the proportion of their equivalent masses.
So, `("equivalent mass of the metal")/("equivalent mass of Ag")=("mass of the metal")/("mass of Ag")`
Let the equivalent mass of the metal be E
`therefore`According to the problem, `(E)/(108)=(0.362)/(3.225)`
or, E=12.12
`therefore` Equivalent mass of the metal=12.12
