An element forms two compounds X and Y in which the element exhibits the valency of 2 and 3 respectively. What is the ratio of the equivalent masses of the element in the two compound?

Text Solution

Let the atomic mass of the element be a.
So. Equivalent mass of the element in compound X.
`=("atomic mass of the element")/("valency of the element in the compound X")=(a)/(2)`
Similarly, equivalent mass of that element in the compound, Y=a/3. so, ratio of the equivalent masses of the element in the compound X and `Y=(a)/(2):(a)/(3)=3:2`.
