Let the atomc mass of the metal M be a
So, molecular mass of the compound, `M_(x)O_(y)=ax+16y`
`therefore`Equivalent mass (E) of the metal M in the compound
`M_(x)O_(y),E=(ax)/(16y)xx8=(ax)/(2y)`
`therefore`Atomic mass of `M(a)=2yE//x`
Hence, valency of `M=("atomic mass")/("equivalent mass")`
`=((2yE)/(x))/(E)=(2y)/(x)`
Valency of ann element in its oxide=2`x`number of oxygen atoms combined with 1 aotm of the element.
`therefore`with 1 atom of M, no of oxygen atoms combined=y/x
`therefore`Valency of `M=2xx (y//x)=2y//x`
