3g of activated charcoal was added to 50 mL of acetic acid solution (0.06N) in a flask. After an hour it was filtered andn the strength of the filtrate was found to be 0.042 (N). The amount of acetic acid absorbed (per gram of charcoal) is-

A

42 mg

B

54 mg

C

18 mg

D

36 mg

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

No. of milliequivalents of acetic acid initially taken =(0.06N)`xx`(50mO)=3 meqv.
no. of milliequivalents of acetic acid left in the filtrate `=(0.042N)xx(50mL)=2.1` meqv.
No. of milliquivalents of aacetic acid adsorbed by activated charcoal`=(3-2.1)=0.9` meqv.
Amount of acetic acid adsorbed by 3g of activated charcoal`=0.9xx60=54mg`
`therefore`Acetic acid adsorbed by 1g charcoal=54/3=18mg
