Why was it necessary to consider the existence of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The actual mass of an atom of an element, except hydrogen, is greater than the sum of the masses of protons and electrons presennt in that atom. Hence, rutherford in 1920, proposed the existence of an uncharged particle in an atom having unit mass. This particle was called neutron.
