Mass number of an ion with unit negative...

Mass number of an ion with unit negative charge is 37. Number of neutrons present in the ionn is 10.6% more than that of electrons. Identify the ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let the number of protonsin the ion=x. therefore, number of electrons=x+1 (`because` the ion contains a unit negative charge). Thus number of neutrons=37-x.
`therefore`Number of neutrons-number of electrons
`=37-x-(x+1)=36-2x`
Percent of excess neutrons as compared to electrons
`=((36-2x)xx100)/(x+1)`
Given, `((36-2x)xx100)/(x+1)=10.6" or",(36-2x)/(x+1)=(106)/(1000)`
or, x=17.04`cong`17 [`because`the number of protons present in an atom or an ion cannot be a fraction]
Hence it is chloride ion `(Cl^(-))`.
