Differentiate between Rydberg formula & ...

Differentiate between Rydberg formula & Balmerr formula.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Rydberg formula is used to calculate the wave number of different series of lines of the spectrum of hydrogen of H-like atoms. It is given by,
`overline(v)=R[(1)/(n_(1)^(2))-(1)/(n_(2)^(2))]Z^(2)=` (Z=1 for hydrogen)
where R=Rydberg constant `=109677cm^(-1)`,
`n_(1)=1,2,3, . .,etc, n_(2)=n_(1)+1,n_(1)+2,n_(1)+3, . .. etc.`
When `n_(1)=2` in Rydberg formula it is called balmer formula. balmer formula is given by,
`overline(v)=R[(1)/(2^(2))-(1)/(n^(2))]`, where n=3,4,5, . . . etc.
