Indicate the subshells present in the M-shell. How many orbitals are present in this shell?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The case of M-shell, the principal quantum number, n=3. the values of azimmuthal quantum no. l are '0', '1' and '2'. This means that the M-shell contains three subshells, nearly 's', 'p' and 'd'. For each value of 'l', magnetic quantum number 'm' can have 2l+1 values. therefore M-shell contains 2l+1 orbitals.

`therefore `M-shell contains1+3+5=9 orbital
