Compare the values of e/m of electron and proton.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

If the mass and charge of an electron be `m_(1) and e_(1)` respectively and the mass and charge of a proton be `m_(2) and e_(2)` respectively, then,
`((e//m)" of electron")/((e//m)" of proton")=(e_(1)//m_(1))/(e_(2)//m_(2))=(e_(1))/(e_(2))xx(m_(2))/(m_(1))=(m_(2))/(m_(1))=1837`
[As both electron and proton carry unit charge and a proton is 1837 times heavier than an electron.]
`therefore`e/m of electron`=1837xxe//m` of proton.
