Find the total numbe of orbitals present...

Find the total numbe of orbitals present in the principal quantum number '3' of an atom. Write the symbols of different types of orbitals and also indicate the number of orbitals in each type.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Total number of orbitals present for the principal quantum number 3 is given by, `3^(2)=9`
Now for n=3, 'l' may have the values 0,1 and 2 so the types of orbitals present in the given shell are s,p and d.
Again the no. of s-orbitals`=(2l+1)=(2xx0)+1=1`
Number of p-orbitals`=2l+1=(2xx1)+1=3`
Number of d-orbitals`=2l+1(2xx2)+1=5`
