(1) Calculate the no. of electrons, protons & neutrons present in (i) ammonium iono (ii) phosphate ion.
(2) Name a species which is isosteric with `N_(2)O`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(1) (i) 1 ammonium ion `(NH_(4)^(+))`
`-=1N`-atom+4 H-atoms-1 electron.
`therefore`Total number of electrons present in the ion
`=7+4xx1-1=10`
Number of protons`=7+4xx1=11`
Number of neutrons`=(14-7)+4xx0=7`
(ii) 1 phosphate ionn `(PO_(4)^(3-))`
`-=1` P-atom+4 O-atoms +3 electrons
`therefore`Total number of electrons associated with `PO_(4)^(3-)`
ion`=15+4xx8+3=50`
Number of protons`=15+4xx8=47`
Number of neutrons`=(31-15)+4(16-8)=48`
(2) A species isosteric with `N_(2)O` is `CO_(2)`.
