(i) Which rule is followed in determining the arrangement of unpaired electrons in P-atom? State the rule.
(ii) Explain whether 3f-orbital is present in P-atom.

Text Solution

(i) First Part: Hund's rule is followed. Second Part: N/A
(ii) Electronic configuration: `1s^(2)2s^(2)2p^(6)3s^(2)3p_(x)^(1)3p_(y)^(1)3p_(z)^(1)`
Phosphorus atom does not contain 3f-subshell.
For 3f-subshell, n=3. hence, the maximum value of l=(n-1)=2 i.e., d-subshell.
