Out of O and `O_(2)`, which one has a greater ionisation enthalpy and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

O has greater ionisation enthalpy. In `O_(2)`, first electron has to be removed from `pi_(2p_(x))^(**)` orbital, which has higher energy than 2p-orbital of O-atom.
