Out of AlF(3) and AlCl(3), which one is ...

Out of `AlF_(3)` and `AlCl_(3)`, which one is more covalent in nature and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The electron cloud of a large anion is easily distorted by small cation and this result in greater covalency in the compound. The largerr `Cl^(-)` ion is polarised to a greater extent than the smaller `F^(-)` ion and because of this `AlCl_(3)` is more covalennt in nature than `AlF_(3)`.
