H-bonding represented as X-H---Y denotes the interaction between a donor species and an acceptor species. X-H is considered as a donor and Y as an acceptor species. X-H is considered as a donor and Y as ann acceptor of H.

Protic solvent: The solvent whose molecules can act as hydrogen-bond donors are caleld protic solvents. water `(H_(2)O)`, ethanol `(C_(2)H_(5)OH)`, acetic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)` etc. , are some comon examples of protic solvents.
Aprotic solvent: The solvent whose molecules can't act as a H-bond donor are known as aprotic solvents. diethyl ether `(C_(2)H_(5)OC_(2)H_(5))`, methylene chloride `(CH_(2)Cl_(2))`, hexane `[CH_(3)(CH_(2))_(4)CH_(3)]`, etc., are some examples of aprotic solvent.
