It is correct to say that bond order always increases with loss of electron? Explain your answe.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

the statement is not always correct. When an electron is expelled from a bonding MO, the bond order decreases, but when an electron is expelled from antibonding MO, the bond order increases. For example, loss of an electron from `H_(2)(sigma_(1s))^(2)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(0)` to from `H_(2)^(+)(sigma_(1s))^(1)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(0)` result in decrease of bond order. however, loss of an electron from `H_(2)^(-)(sigma_(1s))^(2)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(1)` to form `H_(2)(sigma_(1s))^(2)(sigma_(1s)^(**))^(0)` results in increase of bond order. bond order of `H_(2)^(+)=(1)/(2)(1-0)=(1)/(2),H_(2)=(1)/(2)(2-0)=1,H_(2)^(-)=(1)/(2)(2-1)=(1)/(2)`.
