Under idential conditoins of temperature...

Under idential conditoins of temperature and pressure, it takes time `t_(1)` for the effusion of VmL of `N_(2)` gas through a porous wall and the time `t_(2)` for the effusion of the same volume of `CO_(2)` gas through the same porous wall. Which one is greater `t_(1) or t_(2)`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At constant temperature and pressure, the rates of effusion of different gases are inversely proportional to the square roots of their molar masses. As the molar mass of `N_(2)` is small than that of `CO_(2)`, at the given conditions the time required for the effusion of V mL of `N_(2)` gas will be less than that required for V mL `CO_(2)` of gas. hence, `t_(1) lt t_(2)`.
