Between methanol (CH(3)OH) and water (H(...

Between methanol `(CH_(3)OH)` and water `(H_(2)O)` whose surface tension is greater, and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Molecules in methanol and water both are capable of forming hydrogen bonds. But the number of hydrogen bonds per molecule in water is greater than that in methanol. So, the intermolecular forces of attraction are stronger in water than those in methanol. again, the stronger the intermolecular forces of attraction in a liquid, the greater the surface tension of the liquid. so, the surface tension of water is greater than that of methanol.
