How is the vapour pressure of a liquid affected if the surface area of the liquid is increased at a given temperature ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At a given temperature, the vapour pressure of a liquid does not depend upon the surface area of the liquid. If the surface area of a liquid is increased, keeping temperature constant, then its rate of evaporation increases because at a particular time more molecules are now able to leave the liquid surface and go to vapour phase. the increased surface area of the liquid also causes the increase in the rate of condensation because at a particular time more molecules are now able to re-enter from vapour to liquid phase. therefore, the rates of both evaporation and condensation are increased to the same extent. so the vapour pressure remains the same at constant temperature and is not affected by the surface area of the liquid.
