During photosynthesis, water is oxidized to `O_(2)` . What element is reduced?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The photosynthesis reaction is
`6CO_(2) + 6H_(2)O to C_(6)H_(12)O_(6)+6O_(2)`
The oxidation number of carbon in `CO_(2)` is +4 but in carbohydrate formed the oxidation number of carbon is O. Thus carbon is reduced.
