Water can donate a proton and also can accept a proton. So it can act as both acid and base in bronsted sence. A substance Which can act both as an acid and a base is called amphoteric substance. Hence, we can say that water is an amphoteric oxide.
eg : 1 `NH_(3) + H_(2)O ltimplies NH_(4)^(+) +OH^(-)`
2. `H_(2)S + H_(2)O ltimplies H_(3)O^(+) + HS^(-)`.
