What is Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) ?

The amount of oxygen required to oxidise organic substances present in polluted water is called a chemical oxygen demand. It is a parameter for measuring the water pollution. It is determined by oxidising the organic matter with acidified `(50% H_2 SO_4)` potassium dichromate solution.
