What is Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) ?

The amount of oxygen used by the micro-organisms present in water during five days at `20^(@)C` is called Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The BOD of pure water is about 1 ppm. If it is greater than 17 ppm it is highly polluted water.
