Explain how echoes are used by bats to judge the distance of an obstacle in front of them.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1) Bats search out prey and fly in dark night by emitting and detecting reflections of ultrasonic waves.
2) The high pitched ultrasonic squeaks of the bat are reflected from the obstacles or prey and returned to bat's ear.
3) The nature of reflections tells the bat where the obstacle or prey is and what it is like.
4) The bats use ultrasound for navigation and location of the food in dark.

The farthest objects in our universe discovered by modern astronomers are so distant that light emitted by them takes billions of years to reach the earth. What is the distance in km of a quasar from which light takes 3 billion years to reach us?

A LASER is a source of very intense, monochromatic, and unidirectional beam of light. These properties of a laser light can be exploited to measure long distance. The distance of the Moon from the Earth has been already determined very precisely using a laser as a source of light . A laser light beamed at the Moon takes 2.56 s to return after reflection at the Moon's surface. How much is the radius of the lunar orbit around the Earth ?
