What should be the radius of a capillary...

What should be the radius of a capillary tube if water has to rise to a height of 6 cm in it? (Surface tension of water-`7.2 times 10^-2 Nm^-1`)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Surface tension of water,
`S=7.2 times 10^-2 N//m`
Height of water , h=6 cm =`6/100` m
Radius of capillary tube r=?
Surface tension `S=(hrhorg)/2`
`rho`= density of water `=10^3kg//3^3 7.2times10^-2`
`=6/100times(1000timesrtimes10)/2=300r`
`thereforer=(7.2times10^-2)/300=2.4times10^-4m=0.24mm.`
