Which of the two will increase the presure more , an adiabatic or an isothermal process , in reducing the volume to 50 % ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In an adiabatic process , no exchange of heat is allowed between the system and surroundings . Hence , the work done during reducing the volume to 50 % results in the increase in the temperature of the system therby further increases in the pressure `(because` PV=RT). In case of isothermal compression , the excess heat is exchanged with the surroundings , maintaining constant temperature . Hence the increase in pressure is only due to decrease in volume obeying Boyle's law .
Hence adiabatic compression increases the pressure more than isothermal compression .

Compare isothermal and an adiabatic process .

An ideal gas of specific heat ratio gamma with volume and pressure P is compressed to increase the pressure by DeltaP . If the change in volume is Delta V_1 in an isothermal process and Delta V_2 in an adiabatic process, then

Consider a cycle followed by an engine 1 to 2 is isothermal 2 to 3 is adiabatic 3 to 1 is adiabatic such a process does not exist because a) heat is completely converted to mechanical energy in such a process, which is not possible b) mechanical energy is completely converted to heat in this process, which is not possible c) curves representing two adiabatic processes don't intersect d) curves representing an adiabatic process and an isothermal process don't intersect

A gas may expand either adiabatically or isothermally. A number of p-V curves are drawn for the two process over different ranges of pressure and volume. It will be found that a) Two adiabatic curves do not intersect b) Two isothermal curves do not intersect c) An adiabatic curve and an isothermal curve may intersect d) The magnitude of the slope of an adiabatic curve is greater than the magnitude of the slope of an isothermal curve for the same values of pressure and volume
