Consider a system of two spheres of masses 5 kg and 25 kg. The distance between their centres is 1.2 m. What is the distance of their centre of mass from the centre of the sphere of mass 5 g?

A

0.5m

B

0.6m

C

08m

D

1m

The correct Answer is:
D

`C_(1)` and `C_(2)` are the centres of the spheres A and B of masses 5 kg and 25 kg respectively.
`C_(1)C_(2)=1.2 m`
Suppose that the centre of mass of the system lies at C at a distance x from `C_(1)`, along the line joining their centres. i.e., it is at a distance (1.2 - x) from `C_(2)`.
Taking moments about C, we get,
`5g(x)=25g(1.2-x)`
`therefore x = 5(1.2-x)=6-5x`
`therefore 6x=6` or x = 1 metre
