Describe being odd electron molecule, NO...

Describe being odd electron molecule, `NO` is colourless. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In NO molecule, the odd electron is involved in bonding between two bonded atoms, and the excitation of it is difficult (possible only in uv region) In `NO_(2)` the unpaired electron can be excited easily by absorption of vissible light
Thus NO is colourless and `NO_(2)` is coloured.

Odd electron molecule is

In spite of being an odd electron molecule ClO_(2) does not dimerise because.a) The odd electron is localised in the chlorine atom of "p pi -p pi bonding in the central atom b) The two "Cl-O" bonds do not have the same length c) The odd electron is delocalised

Draw the Lewis structure of the species as mentioned below: An odd electron molecule is formed.

Assertion: Nitric oxide is paramagnetic in the liquid and solid states. Reason: Nitric oxide is an odd electron molecule and the gas is paramagnetic.

Statement -1 : NO_(2) and CIO_(2) both being odd electron molecules dimerise. Statement -2 : On dimerisation, NO_(2) is coverted to stable N_(2)O_(4) molecule with even number of electrons.

Nitric oxide, though an odd electron molecule, is diamagenetic in liquid state.
