An electric dipole with dipole moment `4xx10^(-9)` cm is aligned at `30^(@)` with the direction of a uniform electric field of magnitude `5xx10^(4)NC^(-1)`. Calculate the magnitude of the torque acting on the dipole.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given `p=4xx10^(-9)cm theta=30^(@)`
`E=5xx10^(4)NC^(-1)`

torque `=tau=pEsin theta`
i.e. `tau=4xx10^(9)xx5xx10^(4)xxsin 30^(@)`
i.e. `tau=1xx10^(-4)Nm`
Hence torque acting on the system `=1.0xx10^(-4)Nm`
