Why do zirconium and Hafnium exhibit similar properties?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Zr and HF exhibit similar properties due to lanthanoid contraction. Electrons present in f subshell have poor shielding due to which with the increasing atomic number or increasing effective nuclear charge size gets constricted Hence size of hafnium and zirconium becomes almost equal.
