Chennai is a distance of 500 km from Coimbatore. (A) sets out from Coimbatore at a speed of `"50 kmh"^(-1)` and (B) sets out at the same time from Chennai at a speed of `"40 kmh"^(-1)`. When will they meet each other ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Relative speed of A sets with respect to B sets,
Speed of A sets, `v_(A)=50km//h`
Speed of B sets, `v_(B)=-40km//h`
`because" Relative speed, "v_("AB")`
`v_(AB)=v_(A)-v_(B)=50-(-40)=50+40=90km//h`
Time taken to cover a distance of 500 km with a speed of 90 km//h.
`"Speed "=("distance")/("time"),"time "=("distance")/("speed")=(500)/(90)=5.55h`
Hence they will meet after 5.55 hours from the start.
