A wire elongates by 1mm when a load w is hanged from it if the wire goes over a pulley and 2 weights w each are hung at the 2 ends. What will be the elongation of wire in mm?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Young's modulus, `Y = (W)/(A) xx (L)/(l)`
`:.` elongation, `l = (WL)/(AY)`
on either side of wide, tension is w but length is `(l)/(2)` `:.` elongation produced along either side `= (l)/(2)mm`
Total elongation produced `= (l)/(2) + (l)/(2) = 1mm`
