Two railway wagons weighing 5000 kg and ...

Two railway wagons weighing `5000 kg` and `7500kg` are moving at `10ms^(-1)` and `2ms^(-1)` in the same direction. After collision they stick together and move with the same velocity. Find the common speed and direction of motion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given, `m_(1)=5000kg`, `m_(2)=7500kg`
`v_(1f)=10ms^(-1)`, `v_(2i)=2ms^(-1)`
We know that `m_(1)v_(1i)+m_(2)v_(2i)=(m_(1)+m_(2))y`
Hence `v=(5000xx10+7500xx2)/(12500)=5.2ms^(-1)` in the same direction.
