Explanation

If the restoring force or deforming force acts perpendicular to the area the the stress is known as normal stresses.
e.g. Tensile and compressional stress.
If the restoring forceor deforming force acts parallel to the area, then the stress is known as tangential stress.
e.g. Shearing stress.
