Given Young's modulus of elasticity for ...

Given Young's modulus of elasticity for nickel as `207xx10^(9)Nm^(-2)` and Poisson's ratio 0.36 calculate its rigidity modulus and bulk modilus of elasticity.

Text Solution

Given `Y=207xx10^(9)=Nm^(-2)`
`sigma=0.36, eta=?, K=?`
We know that `Y=2(1+ sigma )eta`
So that `eta=Y/(2(1+sigma))=(207xx10^(9))/(2(1+0.36))=(103.5xx10^(9))/1.36`
`eta=76.1xx10^(9)Nm^(-2)`
Bulk Modulus `K=Y/(3(1-2 sigma))=(207xx10^(9))/(3(1-2(0.36)))=(69xx10^(9))/0.28`
`=246.4xx10^(9)Nm^(-2)`
