A steel pillar of length 1 m has to support a building of 5000 kgwt. If the maximum permissible change in the length of the pillar is 2 mm, then what should be the minimum area of cross -section of the pillar. Given Young's Modulus of steel `=2.2xx10^(11)Nm^(2)`

Give `F=5000xx9.8=4.9xx10^(4)N`
`Delta l=2xx10^(-3)ml=1m`
`Y=2.2xx10^(11)Nm^(_2),A=?`
We know that `Y=(Fl)/(A Deltal)`
i.e. `A=(Fl)/(Y.Deltal)=(4.9xx10^(4)xx1)/(2.2xx10^(11)xx2xx10^(-3))`
`A=1.114xx10^(-4)m^(2)`
