Explain how the exchange of O(2) and CO(...

Explain how the exchange of `O_(2)` and `CO_(2)` is achieved between alveoli and deoxygenated blood.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Exchange of `O_(2)` and `CO_(2)` between alveoli and deoxygenated blood by simple diffusion based on pressure/concentration gradient.
The `PO_(2)` in alveoli is 104 mm Hg and `PO_(2)` in deoxygenated blood is 40 mm Hg.
Due to the difference in partial pressure, the `O_(2)` from Alveoli diffuses into deoxygenated blood. The `PCO_(2)` in deoxygenated blood in 45mm Hg and in the alveoli is 40 mm Hg. Due to this difference in partial pressure, the `CO_(2)` from deoxygenated blood diffuses into alveoli.
