Name the processes from which chlorine is obtained as a by-product. What will happen if an aqueous solution of NaCl is subjected to electrolysis?

Text Solution

Down process is used for the prepartion of sodim metal , where cholrine os obtained as a by = prodect this- process ionvoles the electrolysis of a fused mixture ofNaCl and 1`CaCl_(2)` at 873 K sodium is discharged at the cathode while `Cl_(2)` is obtined at the anode as a buy product .
`NaCl(l) overset("Electrosis") to Na^(+) Cl^(-) ("Melt")`
At cathode : `Na^(+)+e^(-) to Na`
At amode :`Cl^(-) to (1)/(2)cl_(2)+e^(-)`
if an aqueous solution of NaCl is electroysed `H_(2)` is evolecd at the cathure while `Cl_(2)` is obtianed at the anode .
