Write the reaction of (i) aromatic and (...

Write the reaction of (i) aromatic and (ii) aliphatic primary amines with nitrous acid .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Aromatic amines react with nitrous acid (prepared in situ from `NaNO_(2)` and a mineral acid such as HCl ) at 273-278 K to form stable aromtic diazonium salts i.e., NaCl and `H_(2)O`

(ii) Aliphatic primary amines react with nitrous acid (prepared in situ from `NaNO_(2)` and a mineral acid such as HCl) to form unstabel aliphatic diznonium salts, which futher produce alcohol and HCl with the evolution of `N_(2)` gas.
