Explain `[Co(NH_3)_6]^(3+)` is an inner orbital complex whereas `[Ni(NH_3)_6]^(2+)` is an outer orbital complex.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the presence of `NH_(3)`, the 3d electrons pair up leaving two d orbitals empty to be involved in `d^(2)sp^(3)` hybridisation forming inner orbital complex in case of `[Co(NH_(3))_(6)]^(3+)`. In `Ni(NH_(3))_(6) ^(2+)`, Ni is in +2 oxidation state and has `d^(8)` configuration, the hybridisation involved is `sp^(3)d^(2)` forming outer orbital complex.

The questions given below consist of Assertion (A) and Reason (R ) . Use the following key to select the correct answer. [FeF_6]^(4-) is a paramagnetic complex while [Fe(CN)_6^(4-)] is a diamagnetic complex . Reason : [FeF_6]^(4-) is an outer orbital complex whereas [Fe(CN)_6]^(4-) is an inner orbital complex .

[Co(F)_(6)]^(3-) ' forms outer orbital complexes while [Co(CN)_(6)]^(3-) forms inner orbital complexes

[CoF_(6)]^(3-) forms outer orbital complexes while (Co(CN)_(6)]^(3-) forms inner orbital complexes. Why

In the following questions , a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R). A: [Co(NH_3)_6]^(+3) is a diamagnetic complex. R: [Co(NH_3)_6]^(+3) is a octahedral shape.

A: [Cr (H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) is Inner orbital complex. R: H_(2)O is strong ligand generally

What is the IUPAC name of complex [Ni(NH_3)_6]Cl_2 ?

Assertion: Complex ion [Co(NH_(3))_(6)]^(2+) is readily oxidized to [Co(NH_(3))_(6)]^(3+) Reason: Unpaired electron in complex ion [Co(NH_(3))_(6)]^(2+) is present in 4p orbital.
