Identify X and Y respectively in the following reactions

A

MgO, C

B

`Mg(OH)_2 :Mgo`

C

`MgO, NH_3`

D

`Mg(OH)_2: NH_3`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

When magnesium is burned in air it form MgO by reaction `O_2` (air) and some of the magnesium also reacts with nitrogen in the air and forms magnesium nitride `(MG_3N_2)`. The reaction of magnesium nitride with water produces ammonta gas and magnesium hydroxide. Magnesium hydroxide is sparingly soluble in water and ammonta `(NH_3)` has pungent odour.

Hence, option (d) is correct answer.
