Iron reacts with dilute HCl quantitative...

Iron reacts with dilute HCl quantitatively to form `H_(2):Fe(s)+2HC l(aq)toFeCl_(2)(aq)+H_(2)(g)`
56g of iron is allowed to react completely with dil HCl at `25^(@)`. If this reaction is carried out seperately (1) in a closed container of fixed volume and (2) in an open breaker, then calculate the work done in each case. assume `H_(2)` gas behaves like an ideal gas.

Work done, `w=-P_(ex)DeltaV=-P_(ex)(V_(2)-V_(1))`
`P_(ex)=`constant external pressure, `V_(1) and V_(2)` are the initial and final volumes, respectively.
(1) When the reaction occurs in a closed container of fixed volume, the change in volume of the system, `DeltaV=0` hence w=0.
(2) In this case, the volume of the system increases against atmospheric pressure due to the formation of hydrogen gas in the reaction.
So, `w=-P_(ex)DeltaV=-P_(ex)V_(H_(2))=-n_(H_(2))RT`
Reason:`Fe(s)+2HC l(aq)toFeCl_(2)(aq)+H_(2)(g)`
`therefore n_(H_(2))=1`. given: `T=(273+25)=298K`
`therefore w=-1xxRT=-8.314xx298=-2.477kJ`.
Therefore, work done by the system=2.447 kJ.
